Sometimes immediately after you wake up you feel like; ‘this is going to be one of my worst days ever’. You’re annoyed and upset at the same time, but you have no clue why. You feel like the whole world is against you that day. Well, I certainly feel sometimes like that and I’m guessing you do too. There are only two ways to get through the day when you wake up on the wrong side of the bed: you do something about it or you stay grumpy throughout the whole day. For every minute that you spend angry you lose sixty seconds of happiness.’’ So the right choice should be easily made. Besides choosing for your own happiness, I’m really sure that you don’t want to whine on or about everything just because you’re feeling ‘off’ today. So therefore, I’ve come up with 5 ways that anyone can do to turn their worst days into their best days.
1. Say 10 things that you’re grateful for after you wake up
Note, that I didn’t ask you to say 5 things. Because you can easily come up with 5 things in your life that you’re grateful for such as; having a roof under your head, being able to play sports, having a nice family etcetera. Most people are struggling to come up with the last 5 or 4 things that they’re grateful for. You know why? Because those are things that are being taken for granted. That’s why people need to think a little harder to come up with the last 4/5 things. However, by actively thinking about it and actually acknowledging how blessed you really are you’ll start to feel more humble and start to appreciate things more. This will make you feel much more positive and you’ll appreciate the day a lot more since you know that you have a lot of reasons to be happy for.
2. Do something amazing
What could cheer you more up than doing something you really want to do, but the timing was never just ‘right’. When you’re having an ‘off’ day, doing that ‘thing’ can really make you forget how miserable you feel and make you feel a lot happier and better. How, you might think. There is a simple biological explanation for this. When you’re doing something exciting and fun your body releases endorphins. Endorphins are neurotransmitters that create positive feelings which results in you feeling more energized, happier and overall just better.
3. Help another person
This one might seem the least inappropriate thing to do when you’re in a bad mood, but trust me (speaking from personal experience) helping another person when you’re feeling miserable is one of the best things you can do. The feelings that you get from helping others will make you feel better and you’re doing a good for someone else. Seems like a win-win situation.
4. Give yourself some ‘me-time’
Spend some quality time with yourself. Listen to your favorite song and sing along. Or watch your favorite show. Or maybe it helps you to feel better when you go out for a walk to just spend some time with yourself. There are many more things you can do. Just make sure that you’re doing something that you like and that it will make you feel a lot better.
5. Love more
Probably the best cure for having a miserable mood is to ‘cure’ it with love. Go to a friend and just give them a hug. Or go to either one of your parents and just give them a hug or tell them that you appreciate them. Often they will respond with even bigger ‘love gesture’. This will make you feel appreciated and loved. And just a simple reminder that people actually care about you will brighten up your day!
In sum, if you wake up on the wrong side of the bed then know that you don’t have to wait until the next day to have a good day. You don’t have to sit through a day feeling miserably. You can do something about it! Happiness is not out there, it’s in you!
