“Don’t fear change, embrace it.”
– Anthony J.D’Angelo-
Change? I don’t know if I could do it…
I am pretty sure that a lot of us have encountered situations that require us to change at a certain point in our lives. Biologically, we all experience changes in our developmental stages, from birth to adulthood. Socially, there are times where changes occur in our workplace, friends, significant others, school, home and other things. This shows that change is a natural order of things. Change is not something that we may want but it is something that we will always have to go through.
However, not everyone is able to accept that changes are necessary in their lives. Why? Most of us are so scared of the unknown that came with change. We often ask “Is this change good for me? Will it be good for me?” To be honest, we may never know what changes could bring to us. It could be good and it could be bad, depending on our response to it. But, changes could be refreshing. It reminds us that life is dynamic, and that we will continue to learn and grow. It represents that the world is full of exciting and new opportunities, should we choose to look at it.
Embracing change is also a way for us to improve our lives. There might be a slight discomfort at first but it does not necessarily means that it is bad. This could be a reminder that we are leaving our personal bubble. It could be terrifying at first but with some strategies, we could overcome every challenge that change could bring.
From my previous experiences, I have learned that changes are inevitable and the more we try to refuse change or denying that we need it, the more unpleasant it becomes. We need to look at change in a different perspective. Instead of seeing it as a threat, we can choose to see it as an opportunity. Moving to a new country can bring us so many opportunities that we may not be able to receive such as learning to live independently. Moving to a new school is an opportunity to make more friends and to learn on how to maintain relationships with others that have been friends for us in a long time. When we see changes as an opportunity to improve your life or for you to learn something new, who knows of the joy it may bring to your life.
I also think that change is necessary for self-development. We will never become the best version of ourselves if we keep on choosing to be the same old person that we are. It is comfortable, but it is dull. I often see people complaining that nothing in their life excites them anymore. People do not want to grow and they resist changes, because it means that they have to be more mature, more responsible, more resilient, and many others. Truth be told, it was not easy for me to move to another country, but it made me a more mature person. I have developed more since than because change can do that to you. Change has the capability to teach us to be strong, to overcome the challenges that come with it and to gather new strengths.
The other benefit of change is that it makes you more acceptant, open-minded, empathic, and also to be more resilient. The thing that I love about change is that it definitely teaches us to know that the way we live could be different than how people live their live their life. We unintentionally become more adaptive living in different parts of the world and by embracing change, new people, new environment, and new culture are not a problem for us because we know that they could be good for us and that we are able to see life from so many perspectives, not just our own.
The most important thing
The most important thing about change is that, it will always remind you that since not a lot of things are constant in life, you become appreciative of those things that are: family and friends. People do come and go but those who love you will remain in your life, especially during your hard times. I think we all know that difficult circumstances show us the true characters of the people around us. It also shows who will help us to overcome the difficulty of changes around us are those who are worthy to remain by our side. We should also be there for the people that we love, no matter how change may bring difficulty to our relationship with other people. In the end, it is not money/achievement/success that brings us happiness; it is about filling up the lives of the people that we love with joy and fulfillment.
So, Are You Up For It?
A new chapter of life is beginning today. I could not tell you that all of the changes you encountered in your life will be comfortable because it may not be. What I do know is that we could accept it with open arms and to calculate both the ups and downs, so we could be more strategic and smarter in overcoming it. If you are going through a tough time, hang in there. You can and will make it out. Your dreams are meant to be a vision, for you to make an impact to the world. It is never meant to be a waste. For those who have finally reap the fruits of your labor, congratulations, now you know how sweet the victory is when we choose to embrace it and not to fight it. None of us are meant to live an ordinary life, should we choose to embrace change for the better. Who knows the joys that change could bring when we took the road less taken?
