We are explorers. People are always curious about the new ‘thing’ or the next new ‘frontier’. That’s why we love traveling so much. We love the feeling of exploring the unknown and to just get away for a couple of days/weeks from our sweet little home and to just delve into something totally new. However there is one difference between all those other ‘things’ and traveling. Traveling is the only thing that makes you ‘richer’. It will change your world for numerous reasons, lets find out which ones.
1. Unique experiences
Traveling has something that you can’t put a price tag on. The people you meet, the experiences that you go through, the things you see. You learn so much through an amazing way, and you’ll connect more with people who are totally different than you. These are all things that not only broaden your worldview, but also help you with your own personal development.
2. It de-stresses us
Traveling provides us with the opportunity to escape our fast-paced lives. When was the last time you actually felt rested and not in a rush. It gives us the break we need and deserve in our lives. Well actually, traveling is not really a ‘break from life’, but you get the point. It focuses our attention on the amazing things in life and lets us escape from our daily struggles.
3. Getting comfortable with the unknown
When you’re in another country you’re often experience new things, different people, different culture and basically just a totally different environment. This might feel overwhelming at first. You might even find it a bit scarier. But luckily, this subsides for the joy traveling will bring to you. The more you travel the better you learn how to deal with new situations and different people. You’re getting more and more comfortable with the ‘unknown’.
4. Bye-bye comfort zone
Traveling forces you to leave your comfort zone. You have to open yourself up to the people and to a new culture; otherwise your trip/vacation will fail, simply because you’re not willing to embrace the culture and the people. That’s why in order for you to make the traveling a success you have to try out the unusual, to embrace challenges and probably the most important thing: doing it all with a smile on your face.
5. You find out who you are
When you’re in a different country that’s when you really can determine if your expectations of yourself match with the reality. You might think for example that you are open to new cultures and that you love to experience new things, but you can only find out if this is true or not when you actually do these things. There are a lot of others things that you’ll find out about yourself when you’re traveling. Therefore traveling really helps with finding out what kind of person you are and what you like and what you don’t like.
6. Empathize with global issues
When you hear something on the news about problems with for example poverty in an African Country and you live for example in West-Europe, you probably won’t feel responsible nor addressed, because it’s ‘too far away’ to get worried about. Traveling provides the solution for this. It brings you in contact not only with the great things in a country, but it also shows you the problems that the country is struggling to deal with. This experience brings all the stories that you’ve heard about the country much ‘closer to you’ with the result that you start to empathize more with global problems, despite the fact that those countries that are still far away from your own home.
7. Life experience
Life experiences can never be taken away from you. You shouldn’t wait until you’re older to travel or when you have enough ‘money’. The fact is that it’s in 99% of the cases never the right time to start a new journey. Do the things you want to do now. Besides all the ‘job’ and ‘financial’ reasons that are holding you back, remember; your biological clock is ticking too. Once you’re older, you’ll have less energy to do things that require a lot of energy and effort. That’s why I encourage you to not wait until the time is right to travel. Make the most out of the situation and just go for it!
I know that traveling won’t be the solution to all your problems. However, I encourage you to take another look at what traveling can do for your life besides just the usual stuff like relaxing on the beach and the shopping, so that next time when you go to a foreign country you’ll even have an more amazing experience. Remember, we travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us.
